Looks like it would be good, with some tires and a locker, Thats pretty much what Wayne did on his Taco....

ya, They do good stock, i was able to drive my brothers halfway thru fordyce trail with 1 broken front CV and the elocker was in perment lock mode.
But it will be way sweeter built on my 1tons and 40's

that thing stock as it sits went 50 miles back eureka and even climbed monument in the rain/snow

I think Ray just wants to build something :conehead: One tons and 40s would bring the cool factor a little bit, but capability wise, I wouldn't think it'd be worth the work. :coolgleamA:

I've never heard anyone say that. Broncos need bigger tires because they are heavy as shit :auto:

plenty of people get most places with 38's and smaller on broncos, you went 44's to go those other places, same with putting 40's on a toyota, to go those other places others cant go, and you cant deny the unique supply of one ton axles we have up here in alaska and the streanght is hard to beat for the price.

Got a link?

umm, im not sure. I had a friend with a narrowed D60R and a HP44F.

Mike Honcho

Heres a link to one, but again its a D44. but the process is pretty much the same. Cut down the tube on the long side, reweld it, order a custom inner and done.

i know jerry (00TJ) has a 60 and 14 bolt in his jeep full width and you cant really tell. rim off set really does alot on how wide it gets though.

I am a firm believer in 1tons with 39.5 boggers under a bronco. Since I have gone to that combo I have had alot less issues. Sure a couple more inches I could throw on some 44's and turn them with no problems with the 4 speed installed......

Ok I am not going to fool anyone I am just to broke right now to get 44 boggers or I would:cryin: ANyone need a set of new 39.5 boggers lol

I still need to find a topshift case to start building dual ultimates.

wayne
03-24-2010, 03:20 AM
ray what are you going to do with that much low range in alaska ? main reason i have not installed the 4.7 case yet is im affraid id be to slow at 90:1

with the 4.88 and stock case i really like it enough grunt to pop over stuff with control yet still be able to spin up thru the mud ..

keep one case stock then the other 4.7 u can have best of both worlds .

Mike Honcho
03-24-2010, 08:25 PM
Thats what im doing. It will be like having 3 cases packed into 2cases. I will have all 3 options, from stock 2.28(front case) to 4.7(rear case) to 10.7(both cases in low)

Mike Honcho
03-24-2010, 08:27 PM
Can I have your ARB compressor? :29:
I might get another one when i get my front ARB. right now there giving you the mini compressor with purchase of a ARB locker. Fawkin things are expensive tho.

Mike Honcho
03-27-2010, 02:22 AM
Well i went out and got the ARB compressor mounted today. Then i decided i was going to do the bed bob. I cut it 13 1/4". Cutting that much out will allow me to put a double cab topper on it if i choose to do so down the road.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00198.jpg

measured it out and taped it off. Painted (excesivly, testing a poss color for the rig) so that i had nice lines to follow for the cut.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00200.jpg

Used a angle grinder with cut off wheel and cut back off first.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00201.jpg

Next removed the middle section and re installed the back tail gate/light portion.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00203.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00206.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00207.jpg

It turned out pretty good. didnt have too much grinding to do. got a couple spots to work out. The dent was the hardest part to work. Just got to finish cleaning it up and then apply the hurculiner that i got to do the inside of the bed and from the body line down.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00210.jpg

Hoping tomarrow to put a trans in the red toy of ryans and then hopefully mount the front spring hanger. Just waiting on my flanges from High Angle Drivelines so i can build the 70 and still got to order the ARB for the 60. If all goes right Weds night i shall be cutting.

What a day, I had the spring hangr all tacked up (3 small tack welds) drilled the holes in the frame using a 1.2" hole saw for fit the frame tube shackel sleeves. Did run into some issues tho. On the passenger side i had to remove a small section of exhaust pipe. Bolt in section. Only problem is that all the fawkin rust. had and issue with a couple exhaust nuts one the Y pipe. one of the wouldnt budge and ended up rounding off. I found a fix for that after the weld a nut trick didnt work. I wasnt going to loose. lol

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00237.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00239.jpg

Finished the frame tubes. Im just running into a small issue after breaking down the 60 to mount the housing up and put weight on the front leafs to check my shackel angle as well as the pinion angle and get a ruff estimate of the caster angle. Problems. center pin is giving me some problems, Think the frame tube jigs were off a bit, I belive their made just for the 2nd and 3 gen trucks plus the angles on the tube were a little off.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00240.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/aaad.jpg

In the process of man handling the bare housing around trying to line up my center pin while working on the muddy ground, i broke my little tack welds off letting the front hanger fall off. I knew i shoulda tacked it a couple more time and used bigger tacks. Never made that mistake before. Now im back at ground zero

Mike Honcho

Hard to say, Still got a ways to go.

Mike Honcho
04-04-2010, 11:44 PM
Well today i got the front hanger tacked up again. bigger tacks this time( still upset that it says Skyoffroad, asked for the plain one). Also got the 60 cleaned up and painted. I called it an early day. so its not finished. I noted that sky gave me the wrong bolts for the 60s ubolt plate/mounting kit. the 2 bolts are way to effin long. Need to play with the shackels some. Its hard to tell, but in the first pic you might notice the springs are under the frame/ towards the inside. where as the shackels are made for 2nd and 3rd gens using full widths i belive. Ill get it all straitned out soon. Ive also got to get more cutoff wheels to trim the body mounts so the shackels will clear them.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00249.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00250.jpg

Hopefully tomarrow my 60ARB will be in as well as my 60/70 to toy flanges from High Angle Drivelines so i can build them as soon as i mount them under the truck for good.

Mike Honcho
04-17-2010, 05:02 PM

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00256.jpg

Well Im waiting to get my T100 oil pan and some of skys frencehd shackel hangers. I donot like my shackel setup.
So today I started to build my 70 so i can go toss it under the truck. Everything was going fine until i pressed the bearing ARB provides you( not a issue with the bearing) on the Oring grove side of the ARB, and some how it cracked the top fawking Oring lip:wall:

They are only 4.5" from eye to eye so that should help the pinion angle some.

That is going to be one hell of an approach angle too... how far forward did you have to move the front end forward? You got winch/front bumper ideas yet?

Mike Honcho

Honestly i didnt measure it. I know that im running toyota rear leaf springs up front with another leaf added in. I used the 47" RUF's wich the center pin is offset. I put the 20.5" (short side) forward. the front spring hanger would be 3" forward of the front frame horns. Its going to work nicly in the rocks.
As for the bumper, i will continue to keep this one one there until i make a custom plate bumper with small stinger wich i will most likely do in Ca along witht the sliders. Im planning on getting one of those smittybuilt XRC8 winches.

Ok,(regarding a D60F) so it turns out when using the remaned D60 forged wheel hubs from Solid axle to convert from DWA to SWA,
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/SA60-08651_400.jpg

you cant just use the rest of your regular D60 parts. Obviously your DWA hubs are different and the rotars are bolted to the hubs insted of pinned whith wheel studs. I figured i could just go get the wheel studs and SWA rotars and calipers for a standard 1 ton Chevy truck equiped with the D60KP. wrong. When using these hubs to convert to SWA on you D60, you must get a flat brake bracket, can be ordered from Solidaxle Or you can make your own.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/SA12_400.jpg

Next you need 73-78 Chevy 1/2 ton brake calipers.
Raybestos parts numers:
Wheel studs # 610-180
Rotors # 5014 (chevy 3/4 front rotors)

The nice thing about these forged wheel hubs are that:
• Wheel hubs designed for strength and durability.
• Hubs are CNC machined from a forging.
• Not a cast piece like all other competitors.
• Utilizes standard components (studs, bearings, seals) readily available at local parts stores.
• Accepts internal style lockout hubs as well as drive flanges from most manufacturers including Solid Axle Industries' drive flange kits.
• These are manufactured by Solid Axle Industries and are not weak remanufactured OEM Hubs.
• Fits Dodge and GM spindles
• Replaces cast units

I will updates more as i go along.

Ok. so ive found out a little more information.
These hubs call for Ryabestos PN: 610-180(3/4 ton wheel stud) wich is a wheel studs measuring .605dia at the knurl. DONOT REAUSE ANY OF YOUR OLD WHEEL HUB STUDS! They are too big. They meassure .675ish dia.
When my brother and i put the truck together real quick to atleast have it on wheels, we reused the old dually wheel studs. i didnt have my rotora at the time. when i put on the rotors i thought i was to use (since their website didnt tell me to use 3/4 rotors) they didnt fit. my new wheel studs PN:610-180 would fall thru the holes.
I went back and got wheel studs from napa for a 1ton chevy truck which are a little bigger in diameter and pushed them thru.
* this is a fix if you do make this mistake, Note that you will need to drill or grind out the holes in the hat of the rotor a very small amount or you will crack the rotor when seating the wheel studs.

When doing a solid axle swap, you must modify your steering shaft in order to connect to the steering gear box since the tacoma uses a rack&pinion steering set up. Originaly the steering shaft will exit the cab pointing strait down. You disconect the the couple and lower the steering colum to take out the shaft andd the cover.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00358.jpg
Coupler disconnected
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00359.jpg
Steering colum was droped and cover and shaft removed. (note: its advised not to let the colum just hang as it will be hanging by the wires. I held it the whole time one handed and reinstalled the colum with 2 of the nuts so it wouldnt hang as i was working)
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00360.jpg
This plastic piece inside the coupler can be discarded as it will not be needed again.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00362.jpg
Next i took the cover and knocked out the rubber sealing grament. I then took a piece of sheetmetal left over from the cutting of my fenders and used it to fill in the old hole in the bottom of the cover where the shaft used to go thru.
Then i took a 2" hole saw and drilled a new hole in the front of the cover. I had to take a die grinder and opened the hole out just a hair as the factory seal is a little bigger then 2"
Reinstalled the seal and painted the cover.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00363.jpg
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00364.jpg
I then grabbed the steering shaft section i got from a Toyota Prius and preped it to be connected to the factory lower shaft. I didnt want to just butt weld the 2 sections together so i got a piece of 3/4 tube that was about 5/8 ID. I took that piece of tube im using as a sleeve and drilled 4 hole in it in different locations so i can plug weld it. Rember to reinstall your your cover before you weld the 2 pieces together.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00365.jpg
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00366.jpg

Now that you shaft is completed just reinstall it in reverse order.
NOTE: I my self had to shorten the steering shaft inside the cab thats attached to the steering colum by 2". The rason for this is because the shaft now goes strait out instead of going downwards. There for my coupler is up against the cover.

Ok, so im learning more as i go. I have yet to find this info anywhere regarding these hubs set up on a normal D60. I was tols that most of the time these hubs are used in comp buggies on custom axles.
Now that my flat brake brackets showed up from spintech i started mounting everything up for the front brakes. I made sure i traced the bracket before instalation so i can send it to my brother to enter into a plasmacam back home.

Once i mounted the braket i reinstalled the rotor and hub, then tried bolting up the GM 1/2 caliper. I noticed the caliper didnt go on as it was hitting the spindel. So i traced the area on the spindal i woul have to clearence, took the bracket back off and ground it down.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00371.jpg

Once it was ground down, i reinstalled the bracket and test fit the caliper.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00372.jpg

Once the test fit proved good, I took the caliper off and reassembled the whole hub, rotor and caliper set up.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00373.jpg

The only problem i am now running into is finding the banjo bolt for the 1/2 ton GM calipers. The standard GM banjo bolt used in the 1ton aplications will not work as they are small. It appears that the banjo bolt i need is a 7/16 course thread bolt and auto part stores dont have them.

Well im probably out of wheeling until i get back to the lower 48. I got some work to do now. To start with my trans in now giving me problems. dosnt want to go into first or stay there sometimes.

Both rear leaf spring are trashed. kinda expected it since there was no bump stops to keep em from over flexing and no antiwrap bar. Front springs are junk now too. they flex too much and is now interfering with my pitman arm when flexed.
Heres the frowning rear springs.

I got to redo the fender bar. Take a little outa the bend so its not tipping down.

In the mean time i went to a wondefull place called Pick-N-Pull where i found these beauties for $70 in a 97 4runner that had 201K on it. leather is in excelent condition. Their both power operated and drivers even has power lumbar. Kickin ***. I will do a write up as per Towrys request when i mod and install the passengers side. Their almost a direct bolt in. Think i will get a seat heater for them later for snow wheeling this year. Might even rig up some air ducts from the A/C that will freeze your nipples off in this rig, to run to the back of the seats.:D

Here yo go Ryan.

So as you seen, i picked up a set of power leather seats from pick N pull for cheap when i was out looking for head rests. As per Towrys request, heres how i installed them.

I first pulled the old seats and set them aside. As you will need to use 2 of the old seat mounting brackets to make every thing line up. You will also more than likely need to remove your old seat belt buckels to reinstall on your new seats. Also, do your self a favor and take as much of the factory seat wiring as you can.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00429.jpg

Pull up the carpet and roll it back out of the way.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00430.jpg

The 2 mounting points closest to the trans tunnel will bolt up just fine. you need to pull the 2 seat mount brackets closest to the door (same thing on both sides) off of the old seat frames. To do so you will need to
1) drill the mounting pin so that you can tap it off with a chisel
2) there will be a spot weld holding it together as well. locate and drill it too.
3) tap brackets free from old frame and grind the paint so they will be ready for install on new frame.
( sorry i didnt take pics of this)
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00426.jpg
Now remove these two brackets from the new seat frame the same way you removed the 2 off of the old frame. (NOTE: there the ones closest to to the outside, or the switch side)

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00425.jpg

now install the backet w/ the pin into the front seat mounting point and install a bolt (leave a little loose)
Install the rear mounting bracket (one with the rubber spacer) and leave bolt loose.

Set the seat in place and install the bolts thru the brackets on the tunnel side. (again, leave a little loose)
Position the 2 seat brackets where you want them and tack weld into place.
NOTE: seats are power, you will need to identify the wireing using a schmatic and hook up jumper wires to adjust the seat for the tack welding process.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00433.jpg
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00432.jpg

Pull the seats out carefully not to break ur tack welds off and weld up the new brackets and paint them.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00428.jpg

Now you will need to identify a power source for the seats. I wanted to find a constant 12V HOT for the seats. using a DMM i found a unused factory male/female connector from toyota that wasnt used. Back probed the side that had wires pre installed, i found a 12V constant Behind the dr side kick pannel ( back probing is recomended so the chances of damaging the connector pins are very minimal)
after identifying my constant HOT pin on the connecter, i grabed some old wires i have laying around that are ready to be installed into a connector. I installed the wire into place, disconnected the female connector and made a harness.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00434.jpg
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00435.jpg
ALL WIRES ARE SOLDIERED.
I decided to ground each seat motor to the floor.
after the wire harness was made and installed i put the carpet back into place.
and pushed the connectors thru the carpet.
once the carpet and all trim pannels were reinstalled i mounted the seats into position using a little blue loctite on each seat mounting bolt. and hooked up the connectors.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/DSC00438.jpg
I ran the seats through all their functions to ensure a smooth and proper operation.

So when i was at fordyce this weekend. all went well for the most part. I did find out i had a leaky oring in my front ARB i didnt check prior to hitting the trail. I did keep loosing 4wd on the trail. happened twice while on winch hill 1. It was really agervating. the second time it happened i just kept going and finished winch hill in 2wd.

What i came to find when taking the passenger side locking hub off was that it had come apart. When looking for the cause, i took the outer most spindal nut off. ( it was a old nut i had been using because i was too cheap to buy new ones) when i did, i realized that was my problem. it had some good size burs on it.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/photoJPGsdgh.jpg

which in turn would catch the inside snap ring that keeps the locking hub together. it would catch the snap ring (as it had done while spinning it around in my hand) and remove the snap ring from its grove causing the hub to come apart.
I ended up bending the snapring into a nice little wavey snap ring and filed the spindal nut burs down. this allowed me to keep playing for now.

After about 7 months of my VIAIR onboard air system sat on my shelf in the parts room. I decided to install it.

I gabbed a extra sheet of 1/8 steel laying around and figured out how I'd like the system payed out. I market it out as well as where to drill.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/pinionray/44d931a6.jpg

I then cut the metal and welded it up. Ensured to leave a opening to drain the tank.

Once that was finished and it was test fitted, I welded the platform in its location.
NOTE: I had already done a complete lay out of the camping, cooler, tools and parts to be carried and made sure it all fits.

I also decided to start building a bed cage. It was orig going to be removable. Then I put more thought into it like, how I drive, terrain ect. So I made it permanent. Not only did I start building the cage, I want to be able to carry a spare in wich one day I will buy. So I designed a tire rack for it.

I started making the hinge part first. I grabbed a piece of 1.5x.120 wall HREW and made a 70* bend. I used a 1.750 hole saw to make my hole in the bed. I cut my tube to stick approx 2-3 inches above the bed floor. I then inserted a piece of 1.25x.120wall HREW into the 1.5 and ran a bead around it.
I also cut 3 separate pieces of 1.5 to be my hinges. Longer one without zerk fittings is the spacer.

Here's the pieces in their place.

Looks good, but i noticed in one pic, the tire is pressed real hard against the horizontal tube on top. I would use a spacer or something to bring the tire out a couple inches. Ive seen tires be held like that and it can leave a permanant dent in the sidewall (not that it matters, except for balancing and whatnot...)

Thanx. Ya i prob gotta add a spacer when i find a tire to mount on it.
I have to halt some progress on this turd. The cummins sprung a leak at the gear housing cover. gotta finish pulling the cam and shit to install the new gasket and get it together then fix the G-ride (CTS) before i can get back to this.
