A group of us met up to make a run to Hicks Creek. We left on Friday evening, and made it to the "Hill" at around 9PM. We made it a to a draw about 3 miles up the valley, and called it a night. The jeep guys left early that morning, around 11 or so I believe.

Rich and I went to go look for some others in our group that had gone hunting earlier in the morning, so we went back up the "Hill" with the jeepers who had just left us. Jeff (Red Jeep on boggers), blew up some spiders gears apparently, but from what I've heard, had no issue getting out the rest of the way (I'm sure he'll chime in on that..lol).

The hill was not too bad. I got strung out a little wide in one section and had to be winched back to the good ground, and with a little spotting, made it up with no issue (Along with the rest of the Jeep crew).

They went on out, Rich and I stayed waiting to hear from the other guys regarding their whereabouts... and finally hit them on the radio. Turns out, they had continued down the valley (Opposite direction that Rich and I went), and were stuck, and had been since 8am that morning (Because of the radio Nate/Bill were using, a handheld, we couldn't hear them until we were up high).

Rich and I dropped back down the "Hill", to go rescue Nate, and along the way picked Bill up who was hunting back towards us. We diceded to head back towards Caribou Creek, and get camp setup. We ran into a few hunters along the way who had filled their tags :yesnod:.

Saturday, we spent the last half of the day getting camp setup, planning on a good hunt in the morning. On the way in, Nate had semi-seperated his t-case from his tranny (Bolts came loose). Turns out, the threads in the tcase were stripped (Thats what he gets for using my old stuff...). We JB welded the bolts in, and ran a ratchet strap to keep the two connected tightly, and had no other issue wih it.

The weather was great... atleast, until the sent went down. It got cold. Well below freezing cold. Sunday morning... everything was covered in frost. Nice clear skys, but made for a semi late start due to the temps...lol

Sunday was spent hunting the surrounding areas, exploring areas, and following creek beds. Nate nad Rich were on foot up high, and aside from seeing an immaculate Bull Bou, had no luck with the moose bull.

Mid afternoon, we decided to pack up and get a good start out, as there appeared to be weather heading our way, and we didn't want to get stuck on the wrong side of a wet "Hill". We mae it virutally problem free, until about 1/4 mile passed the "Hill". Thats when, Nate realized he'd lost his steering... :banghead:

Broken sector shaft, on some bypass trail that we didn't come in on. Sucky. We had a friend (A good friend apparently ), drive out a steering box to the trail head. I drove Nate to the trail head, and Bill was on the wheeler, and Rich stayed at the truck getting his hunt on (Hopefully he got something, since all of us loud asses weren't around:rolleyes5:).

I left my tools and some gear with Nate and Bill at the trail head waiting on Buddy.... made it about 50 ft out of the parking lot.... I noticed a shimmy...lol By the time I realized what it was, it was too late. I had a rear drive shaft flailing around underneath my truck. Fixed that on the side of the road right quick and was on my way.

As of now they are still up there doing the steering box replacement. I hope it goes as planned because I don't want to drive all the way out there till ATLEAST next year :icon_bs:.
Edit: Nate got a fork at about treeline 2PM on Monday.... :toetap05:, truck is under its own power now...lol

This is a great trail, we had a blast with all that went, even if the first night was a little roudy...lol The scenery is amazing, and it the weather cooperates, makes for a great trip any time of year.

FYI, the "Hill" when wet would be a mistake... especially in a full size rig. :seeya:. The second time going up the damn thing, I think I even peed a little...lol

I am leaving out a good deal of went on, hopefully others will fill in some blanks ? Tow rig burning down, etc?

Pictures on the way..

I did track everywhere we went, but we pretty much just followed the tracks I got from snowbear. We did some exploring in the valley that was tracked as well..

There were a few already posted. Its hard to tell because you can't quite get the right prospective. Everything is off camber, and you can only see so much of it at a time.

Its not that bad really. Its just that when its wet, like really wet, forget trying to go up it under your own power. There are a couple winch points near the top, but I'm not sure how "Full Size" friendly they are... they look pretty chince.... :frown5:

There is a line to the left that is being "Devloped", it appears, and that seemed to be the easiest route. Hoever, if many more rigs go that way, it will soon look like the right side (Going up)..

Just need to remember to check the weather forecast before heading out, or have some days to spend waiting out the weather...lol

Great write up and pictures :lurk5: That one of my truck heading up the hill is a little sketchy... daylight makes a big difference...lol

You guys fixed that at the trail head? Who brings spare spider gears...lol

Great trip for sure, can't wait to do it again next year, maybe a little earlier in the year when its drier hopefully. and not so cold at night, and doesn't get dark.

On a side note...
I was dissapointed on how the boggers would completely pack up and NOT clean themselves unless you were spinning hard ...(As one of Tony's pics shows they were just completely plugged!)) Sometime finess is needed and the boggers would plug up and become 'bald'! Since every truck but Cody's TJ had Boggers at all 4 corners we had nothing to compare them to. Every time I checked Cody's TSL Super swampers (on his front axle) they were more cleaned out than his boggers on the rear!! HMMM!! With thick pasty mud and slow moving Boggers might not be the best tire in our mud! It all depends on how one can drive them I guess ... Keep them spinning and they'd clean right up, try and go slow and they'd load up! Yep I said it ... My next set of tire might NOT be boggers... :yikes:

I think its terrain specific. Although this was the first time I'd seen a bogger not easily clean, I compare that two the HUNDREDS of times I've seen them clean with no effort, while a TSL was slicked up.

I think the TSL might just clean that type of mud better. However, I would not rush off to switch tires because 99% of the trails we run, the bogger will outperform the TSL, there is no comparison. :sifone:

This is a reinactment of my write up from before!

We all met up at Palmer Carrs Friday around 5:00pm. Tony driving BABS, Levi and Cory hauling Levi's Cherokee riding on 37" Boggers behind my Denali, Tylor and Alex driving up in Tylors 2 Door Cherokee riding on 33 Boggers and Cody, Britny and I with both of our TJ's loaded on the the 5th wheel hauler we just finished on Thursday. Both of out TJ's are riding on 38.5" tired with mine having boggers at all 4 corners and Cody sporting Bogger in the rear and super swampers up front.
An uneventful road trip (for us, more on this later) and we are unloading @ mile 100. It's a real nice evening weather wise and we know Nate is about a half hour behind us so we head out.

First trip with Jeeps on trailer!
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b79/05SDI/Summer%202009/022-3.jpg

This trail starts out mild as they always do! lol I was having some sort of electrical issue from under the dash.... Engine would just die. Wiggle a wire and I could restart it instantly. (hence the pic Tony showed of Cody and I working on it, well Cody working me holding the light)
It starts to rain and we all have heard how bad the hill is when wet .. so me make temp repairs and are alomst eady to go when Nate and Bill in Superman and Rich on his Grizzly.

Pretty easy going just a few spots that need to picked through.

As some of Tony's pics showed BABS gets almost headlight deep in a hole! Just as I get stuck Tony asked .. Hey is it deep? I say Let's see what the 44's will do! LOL He made it about as far as I did (but in a more difficult line) All I can say is when a Big rig gets stuck They need big rig help! after a few tugs by Nate BABS is set to try a different line. Tony makes it Nate tries to follow but doesn't quit make it. Tylors CHerokee was stuck enough in this bog that Both Cody and I had to work together to winch him out! Even though he hit it with pleanty of momentum! By the way, in this section of the trail got each wheeler stuck EXCEPT for Levi's Cherokee as he picked a good line and rallied through unstoppable.

We watch as the big ford play "nope not this way" and pull each other out until about darkness has set in. While the big rigs were playing we see a guy walking up to us from behind .. IT's Brandon!! Soaked adn muddy head to toe! He road a pit bike from Mile 80 of the glenn hwy all the way to where we were! He and another guy were comming with a 55" AG tired hunting buggy and their mid 90's Dodge tow rig caught fire and burnt to the ground!! Agter a change of cloths he jumps in with me and they through the pit bik in the back of Tylors Cherokee.

We planned for a dry daylight decent down "the Hill" well I was first and realize as I went by the "Steep Hill" sign I realised I might be on a ATV trail ... NICE! Since Brandon had already had a hell of a day I said Hey lets buckle up this hill is suppost to be 'core'! So we head down first (Wish I had my HID from my K5) once we find the acural truck trail it was fairly easy going BUT I would NOT want to back up it!! SO we make our way to the bottom and run out a bit and turn around and park .... NO ONE else is even trying the hill! (OH Crap! I look at Brandon and say, " THEY have ALL the beer! " He replies with, "That was a bad move Jeff!" I was like I KNOW! What was I thinking!! Finally after 20 mins or so we see headlights starting to crest the top and come down! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, sets of headlights YES, they are bringing beer!
We drive a bit more and find a place to have an eventful evening around the fire telling stories and enjoying being outside in Alaska! THe evening was filled with raspberry growlers, Jager, Crown, and what ever the others were drinking! lol

Here is our sleeping quarters for the night Not a tent was pitched!!
Here is a shot of Rich's gun check out the custom flute!
We wake after a quick nights sleep (or lack there of) and find Nate and Bill have already headed out to go hunting. Some of us are feeling abit like we slep sitting up right in a Jeep ... (Yea that's the reason I feel like crap!)

Well the 4 Jeeps started heading back and as soon as we start up the hill Tylor hits a rock with his rear driveline and busts a U-joint .. NO way to make it up in front wheel drive so he replaces it right there on the hill! We climb on up and find the mud hole about 2/3 the way up! Cody makes it thought but I'm not sure about the rest of us so Levi and I decide to take a left route NOPE we can get all but the last 200 feet! Back back down a piece. THis is where w meet Tony (on the lower side of the mud hole on the hill) As he keeps trying he keeps gettin closer and closer to the steep edge. SO we hook my winch line to BABS rear bumper to help pull him where he needs to go. In the mean time I try and respostion my Jeep and snap my spider gears! (insert many cuss words here) Now I have to climb this hill in 2 wheel drive! Well I leave it in low range and climb the whole way up with a little spotting through some huge ruts and mounds of earth. Lifted TJ's don't feel to stable with one tire almost 2 ft in the air on an off camber hill! We climb to the top following Tylors line .. Non issue!

Here is BABS on the last of the hill after the mud hole. As you have heard many times before pics DON'tT show hills Justice!!!
We say good by to Tony and Rich and head back to the highway. I have to drive the whole way in high range 2 wheel drive! I made it through every hole but one! The ol TJ can sling some mud off the ol boggers in HR2WD!! Mud was landing 40' in front of me and for what seemed like 8 seconds after I let off the gas it would be raining mud clumps down on the roof!
Made it to the Trailer:
