ok ok i know just go one tons.... but seriously i have 35 inch km2s with locked front/rear and get too much wheelspin mainly on icy shit so yea i break front axle shafts/u joints when they suddenly grip the ground or something:.... heres what im thinkin... if i get some beefier axle shafts, u joints and up to boggers like 38.5 or 39.5 i think id have substantially more traction and less wheelspin therefore less axle shock... could this combo work? or am i thinkin irrationally..?

IMO you can't always rely on less wheel spin, especially if you have the ability to spin them.

The cheapest way to upgrade your axles would be to go to some 4140 Yukons, or something simular. They make lots of aftermarket chromo shafts for the 44, so you should be able to find somehting.

Also, the front locker greatly increases the stress on the fornt axle. Take that our, and your axles would surely hold up fine with chromos (But again, giving up traction for reliability).

Will they hold up to a 38"+ bogger? I think thats the wrong question. The question should be, "Will they hold up to a 38"+ bogger with me behind the wheel", and the only way to answer that is to try it....:auto:

i see fail in your future again, going to a bigger tire and one with a better "bit" is going to cause the same carnage as your having now i wheeled the 44 for a year with 38 tsl's with a lot of motor and i used up 4 sets of spares in a short time

Dont run half ton crap behind a V-8 period. I tried it with the Bronco and earned the name BLB. If you decide to run with a Dana 44 you might as well carry about 4 spare shafts for each side. I promise you locked up front no matter what axles you have (ie Yukons) or the beefy CTM u-joints, you will break running 38+ tires. The u-joints will hold but you will twist a shaft or break it near the splines. The chromoly axles for a 44 are rated for a 35 inch tire. I ran 38 TSL's locked up front and broke 3 shafts in a month. DO NOT even think about running 39.5 or even 38 boggers locked on a Dana 44.

Like Tony said you could get the Chomoly axles for it and have a lighter foot...but good luck with that. Price the axle shafts with CTM joints, they are not cheap. Go 1-tons get it done with and not screw with it. I wish I had 1-ton the Bronco 2 years ago:banghead:

Its all in the way you push your rig & again the key word is "PUSH". I have had HP-D30's hold up to 38" TSL's & never had a shaft or joint bust on the trail. That was with the small D-30 joints to add to top it off. I now run a HP D-44 from a 78 F-250 & it has been reliable for my wheeling style. No busted joints or shafts off-road yet even on 37" Boggers. Step back & look at how hard you play & then build from that point. A lot of guys are going up to the D-60 & its a much better choice if you like to "push" hard. Beef up the joints in a D-44 then you will have the shafts/yokes failing. Good luck with your axle choice.

you also have to factor in you have a cherokee which is lighter with less HP than the 1/2 ton v-8 powered dodge dan has. the weight of a full size truck and extra HP to move it will put alot more strain on the 1/2 ton axles than a mid sized jeep with a strait 6.

personally dan do you want a dana 44 beefed up that might hold or a stock dana 60 that you know will hold?

personally i like to know my axles arent going to break unless some crazy shit hits the fan, factor of safety my friend, being pulled off a trail sucks, i know!

Swapping in a dana 60 is usually cheaper than upgrading the shafts and joints...

Curb weight, lb 4346 thats bone stock and dry! A little lighter than the heavy stock bronco at 4616. We all know Ford builds there frames out of real steel though hinch the extra weight

4616 for a stock bronco? I think you reading your tag wrong. My door tag says 6470.. thats the GVRW

Isn't that total rig/gear weight?GVRW? If an 80s Bronco weighs that much I wonder what mine comes in at?

I believe that is the case... but you would think that would be a more realistic number, than the actual curb weight.

However, there is definatly a distinction between curb weight and GVWR... and it appears that the curb weight is what was being referenced here... my bad...lol :leaving:
