View Full Version : On going 1998 TJ upgrade thread
Ok well the secret is out; I left the Ford fan club and became a proud Jeep member. Now this is completely opposite of the entire reason why I even got rid of the Bronco to begin with. At the start I was looking for a 4dr style SUV and something that was NOT full-size. I looked for a bit for a 4runner and that was my original plan until I found this Jeep.
Many of you that do know me know that I have wanted a Samurai for about 3years. I never really did give up on the idea but thought it would be interesting to go a bit bigger and get the Jeep Wrangler. I have always liked the 4-link setups and the way they ride, wanted something that was not a full-sized rig, and got a decent deal on a 1998 TJ that just needs a little love.
Here is what it currently has/is
1998 Jeep Wrangler Sport 4.0L (100,114miles)
4” Skyjacker superflex short arm kit (installed 2006)
New 33x12.5 BFG A/T ‘s (with matching spare spare)
Advanced Adapter mount for spare tire carrier
Front Quick disconnects
Nice Sound bar mounted on the Roll bar
Roll bar mounted fire extinguisher
New front sway bar
Warn Front bumper
New Warn m9000 winch
Now what is needs is the t-case rebuilt. My guess is the front bearings are about shot due to the slack and horrid popping noise from underneath while changing gears. First thought was a front driveline joint but they seem all good. This is not a big deal because I planned on installing a SYE so it would be a good time to rebuild.
Now my thoughts…
Short shaft SYE for the NP231 and change the parts to make it a HD (Wide Chain kit and 6 Pinion Planetary Gear) or just order the NP231 completehttp://www.jbconversions.com/products/np231j/complete_shortsye.php
Next big upgrade is axles.
Right now the stock Dana 30 and 35 combo is a bit scary. My goal is it run 35” tires locked front and rear. I am thinking a HPD30 from a XJ and a Ford 8.8 Rear (Disc Breaks) or even a Chrysler 8.25 from XJ.
Driving home after I purchased the Jeep I did rescue a Chevy SUV that had slid into the ditch. While winching them out I noticed something that could be an issue and that was the draw off the battery the winch had. My plan to fix this is to replace the 90amp alt with a 136amp alt, 1000cca battery, and use 4gauge wire to get the full charge of the alt.
Suspension thought
To fit the 35” tires a bit better and get a little more clearance I was thinking about a 2” body lift and 2” BB for a total of 8” of lift.
The jeep has a soft top and the upper door skins had seen better days. I ordered some nice upper door skins from 4wd.com with the siding glass vs zipper window. I also ordered a few misc parts just to give the Jeep a bit more protection (armor and metal light guards).
I have never owned a Jeep and wheeled only Fords so this is going to be an interesting learning experience. If any fellow Jeep owners have any ideas or think mine is just retard please let me know lol. I have come to find out there is a TON of aftermarket equipment and you can become broke fairly fast building one. I will be using this as a daily driver/wheeler for now.
I am sure this will be an ongoing adding crap to the Jeep thread but the build page is now in place.
Ok so here are some pics of the jeep with the new door skins on. Funny looking since the top is a bit faded! The upgrades are starting!!
Old vs new door skin....and lame btw you have to order them in pairs!

Yea the interior needs a little cleaning. I have a floor kit on the way as well

Hey George, I've got a hp dana 30 front axle your welcome to have, one side needs ball joints for certain it has 3:55 gears, but I stole the axles out of it. I took the knuckles off and stole the wheel bearings as well. If it is something you might be interested in let me know. If I remember correctly the side with the bad ball joints ruined the knuckle, but axle housing and diff is in good shape. PM or give me a call 229-8237.
And just for you information I've got a 231 with a brand new sye kit intalled. I purchased it to install in my XJ, but never got a round to get new drive shafts and now that I've go a new project I don't think I'm going to use it. I still have put oil in the t-case yet. So what I'm trying to say is I am in the market for a 23 spline input np203 t-case with the circular bolt pattern out dodge trucks and ram charger. So if you come across something I bet I could make you a smoking deal. Otherwise the 231 maybe cut up to make a 231/dana 300 doubler. I've got a Chrysler 8.25 and a spare D35 I believe both with 3:55 gears too. Let me know I wouldn't mind opening up some garage space.

How much if any is the Chrysler 8.25 stronger than a Dana 35

I run 35's with my 4 inch lift and contact just the fender flares under full stuff. I am goin to do a 1 in or so jks body lift on mine some of the ppl on here have seen mine and it did ok for a stock jeep with a lift and tires..

Thanks for the input. After a little thought I am thinking about just doing the 2" body lift and not the BB. That way I dont have to worry about driveline agle so much. Should be fine with 6" of lift and 35's:thumbsup:

 well you can gain some clearance with different f fenders they make some nice ones after market i beleive they do the same for the rear
Fullwidths are the way to go if your gonna get other axles take it from someone that did 32's 35's then 36's then 38's
Be careful how high you go with the shorter width axles
I had 5.5 in coils with 1 in body and can clear 38's
Good luck with TJ

i got 4.25" of lift and 35s. 3 inch coils and 1.25 body lift. also i would not recommend going much over 4 inches with the short arms, that would cause a harsh ride due to the control arm angle. at 3 inches with mine the control arms are still at a good angle and the body lift makes room for the 35s.

Got a ways to go. Dont wast your time going with the 8.25 in the rear. If your going to do a swap on the low end of money go 8.8 out back. BEEF! jEERY, If you keep messing with phill im sure he can stomp your ass a new mud hole!:nopity:
Well got the parts in I ordered mostly and picked up some other crap from around town and started working on it. Hard to get it all going with work, hockey, and the end of football but it is started. I will post pics later on Wednesday of progress:lol:

i figured it out, what axles to use......
Go find some unimog axles, great size for your size truck, gives more lift and gear reduction to run bigger tires without changing suspension and a crap ton of ground clearance..... sounds like the ideal setup to me, and it would be different
K got some of the armor parts on. The WP armor set is nice compared to others and easy to install. It's metal, not plastic like other trash, and goes on fairly easy with a little drilling and pop rivets (3/16" Drill bit).
Just a little removeal of a few items, Top, taillights, and license plate mount and it was pretty much ready to go. My son was nice enough to pre clean the area for me:smile5:
591
Rear Tail Light EuroGuards - Nice, strong and metal. Maily got these because every off-road rig I have owned I have backed into or smashed something to break a taillight. Hope these at least save a couple lens lol. Came with some cheap bolts but nothing a trip to NAPA couldn't fix.

First was to install the Warrior Products Back Plate, Rear Corners, and Tailgate Cover. Pics are a bit dark but I will get more later as I get other crap done.

Cant help there is a million aftermarket parts which makes it really nice and easy. Could say the axles would require a little fab but thats a lie as well just have to cut and grind old brackets off and weld the new ones on. Goes back to buy vs build I guess:boxing_smiley:.

Who cares what you wheel or how you make or build your rig as long as you get out and use it. This secion of the forum is suppose to show progress and additions made to peoples rigs or certine projects they have. Everyone has stuff they "purchased" as well as "fabbed" on their rig.
Construtive input is welcome but usless post is just plain retarded.:boxing_smiley:

It seems to be coming along pretty good. I wouldn't get too worked up about the buy vs. build thing. Nothing you do is ever good enough with "some" people, and will never be as "good" as theirs, regardless of what you do. It is unfortunate that is some peoples attitudes, but unfortunately, it is the reality of it.
How about some pictures with the 35s already...

I wouldn't exactly say its a rarity. A quick search of some of the chevy websites produced many links (I'll link a couple of the better ones). I'm sure if you were to google it, there would be many more. I agree that building a jeep up isn't exactly inventing the wheel, but its a rig that will get him out there to 95% of the places you'll be able to go in yours Cory.

THx Jerry will do. I have to take the dash apart a bit to install a new CD player. I should have the interior removed by today. I was going to just bedliner the whole thing but since I did that on the Bronco I decided to just redo the floor with vinyl

Never said I as building something rare just saying less of them out there
Well got the interior totally stripped down for the new flooring. Other than really dirty there was no rust which was great. I did decided to line the bottom of the door area with bed liner to give it a bit more protection. I masked it off and hit it with sandpaper after I took the picture. I hit the bug guard with 80g sandpaper as well to line it to give it extra strength.
The wife wants rock sliders/rails on the side to help her get in lol so I guess thats going to be soon. The CD player/amp and sound bar all needs to be rewired which sucks:skep:
Looks even smaller with no seats in it lol

Area for the herculiner

So far coming together
614
Inside floor pans in good same minus the dirt. I did find over a dollar in change, lucky me lol.

Never tried to bed liner a plastic bug guard. Only guessing it should be ok if groved enough for the liner to stick to it

The upper half door skins with the glass are great! You dont have to always screw with the zipper. Its nice just sliding either side over lol.

Thx I had seen that I got some parts from him already. I think I am going vinyle floor tho vs carpet, water issue mainly lol. Jeep had old carpet in it that smelled bad like mildew and stale cigs.:ack2:
Well I have done little work to it since stripping it out due to remodels and other unforeseen management issues. I am hoping to get the t-case out and the new one in along with the drive shaft.
I currently have the funds but i am torn of what gears. I will be running a HP dana 30 front and For 8.8 rear. So with 35"-36" tires would 4.56 or 4.88 be better......tuff call.:skep:
krylon
01-30-2010, 05:23 AM
I would do 4:56 if you go lower with the thought of upgrading tires youd just have issues with that dana 30 if you wheel hard. and how much are you really gonna wheel it? if its more of a occasional rig dont make it to where your mileage on the road goes in the tiolet.
Bronco85
01-31-2010, 04:25 PM
4.56 and 4.88 wont give you much of a difference in RPMs.. Maybe 2 or 300 RPMS.. But I've seen the way you drive offroad. I would go for the 4.56s you can spin the tire faster that way :)
Well I picked up the HP Dana30 housing Monday thx to Derek:hurray:. It didn't have knuckles which doesn't matter since I have to use the ones off the TJ anyways. Wednesday before the game I am going to pick up the 8.8 rear from a 1998 Explorer. The rear is in great shape with only 35,000 miles on it and it has limited slip lol.
Looks like I am going to order the Master Install kits as well as 4.56 gears from Curtis. It was a tough call on the gear ratio 4.56 vs 4.88 but I plan on running 35" so I think it will be perfect. In the long run I am thinking about 35X12.50R15LT Trxus MT or the wider TSL/SX 35X15.50-15LT on 15x10 rims. Anyone have any experience with these tires?
Will take some more picks once I finish the inside, but I did manage to get the vinyl floor in (Pain in the rear) and the center console back in place. I don't want to place to much back into it until I get whatever new head unit in place I want...thinking about using a marine waterproof cd player:20:

I wouldn't waste too much money on a marine head unit. Just stop by Best Buy Pick up a normal cd unit and purchase the extented warranty. It covers dust and water damage for up to 4 years. Just a head up.

I talked with my dad and I guess he has a new waterproof cd player he was going to use for his boat he is giving me so I got to save a little $$ there and got a nice little unit lol:thumbsup:
Ok well the entire inside is back together with the camo vinyl floor installed (pain in the rear and never again). Got the stereo working along with both door speakers and the sound bar. Still have a little painting to do but afterwards it looks like i will be playing the part waiting game since my crap has yet to be shipped from the East Coast due to the weather. I will post some pics later.
Tires will be ordered on Tuesday as well and looks like 36x12.5x15 TSL Radials win.
Well everything is ordered and shipped. Greg came over and helped check the compression of the motor which is all good and we installed new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and coil. Also put in the 130amp alt which is huge compared to the little stock one. Did find out there is a small leak on the top end of the radiator (cheap plastic stock crap) so that will have to be addressed soon as well:31:
I still need to fix a few wires and throw in the big 1000CA battery but I did re wire the whole Jeep stereo and put in the cheap v2 dvd player (3.5" screen) and did the wire bypass so you can play a movie while moving down the trail...the kid should like it lol
I removed the mirrors and used Herculiner on the base of them as well as the mirror relocation brackets. Its pretty sweet it moves the mirrors just of the door so you can have mirrors while door-less in the summertime. I also Herculined the kick panel under the door where the rock sliders will be mounted when they come in as well as the bug guard to give it that little added extra strength.
I will post so pics later but all in all I am just waiting on parts to get here now.
Ok I come so pics and I got the word today ALL my crap is coming to the office tomorrow. SO yes this weekend I will sart to "bolt" the jeep together:thumbsup:

Just seeing the pic of your alternator reminded me. I can't tell you how many alternators I have put in the XJ.:frown2: Some reason they don't like that location. Maybe because I don't mind burying or swamping my jeep, but it seemed like I replaced mine about every 3 to 4 weeks depending how often I was out wheeling this past summer. Thank goodness for lifetime warrenty at auto zone. I hope yours works out better, but you may want to look into relocating the alt. There may already be a kit out there I just haven't looked for it just yet.

A few catch up pics. I hope to get the snorkle and all done by the end of the week to start on placing in the 4.56 gears into the HP Dana30 and 8.8 rear. also need to drop the t-case and install the new t-case with SYE.

Well I know its been a bit since I posted an update but I have been really busy.. First I want to say a big thank you to Greg. Our little re-gear axle swap turned into ALOT more lol.
First small snag we ran into was with the t-case. We were going to use the one I had picked up with a SYE kit already installed and just change the speed sensor out but as we were looking at we realized it was not the correct spline count. Ended up having to break apart the old t-case and installing the new SYE kit with wide chain kit. It all worked out anyways...ended up able to use the same speed sensor lol

All in all after we got the parts in the jeep is close to done...maybe by next Wednesday. Done so far in the past week and half...
Front
HP Dana 30
1/2" Wheel spacers
Superior Axle shafts with the larger 44 spicer u-joints
4.56 Gears
Detriot Tru-Trac limited slip
Superior Axle tube seals
New brake pads (both sides)
New front drive shaft u-joint
New radiator installed and electric fan plus hardware picked up
Swapped over and installed SYE with heavy duty wide chain kit
Installed 2" body lift (fun times there)
Installed new clutch with throw out bearing
Rear
Ford 8.8 (Disc brakes:smile5:)
1/2" Wheel spacers
4.56 Gears
Detroit No-Spin Locker
Resurfaced Rotors (Turned)
New brake pads (both sides)
New brake cables and e-brake
Had to shorten the bottom rear radius arms to get the pinion angle the way we wanted it. Drive shaft is not yet installed in the rear but should be the "new" correct size. The front drive shaft is perfect and we didn't even have to use the 1" motor mount lifts. Greg has ALOT of jeep knowledge and sets gears faster than anyone I know :patriot:
Since my dad stole my new shocks for his Toyota I had to order more, they should be here Tuesday. With any luck it should be all together by Wed-Thur. I will try and get some pics of the front finished product with drive line angle as we as the back. Once it is out and mobile I can get some better shots!:50:

George, I didn't even think about spline count, was yours 23 or 21 spline? I hope it didn't set the project back to much. Sorry about the brain fart. Looks like everything got worked out. I did get your message The day you called. had every plan to call you back, but that day was super crazy and forgot you called untill I saw this post. Sorry man wish I could have been of more help.
Mine was 23 count. I believe pre 91-92ish it was a mix of 23 and 21 spline count in the XJ'S. Not much of a set back...I just have part of a t-case i have no clue what to do with lol. I am saving the empty case itself though
