I've Wanted to find a winch anchor I could use if I ever found myself seperated from group or wheeling by myself. I've never really liked the Pull-Pal set up, but then again I've never used one either. I've heard of people using stakes, but never seen anyone set it up. I found this set up and am curious on everyone's thoughts. It would be easy to make and easy to carry.
http://www.forgetec4x4.co.uk/ It's about half way down. Makes a triangle.

Maybe real hard ground would hold spikes.
1. Take two axles, sharpen them. drive them in at an angle, 45% and 6inchs apart, facing away from the vehicle leaving about 8 inches sticking out. tie together with rope, chain, ratchet straps, etc. hook to the one closest the vehicle, next to the ground. when down winch axles out of ground.
2. Spare tire, shovel and winch.
Thats two ways how to due it.

I've been thinking about this... I'm going to try and figure out how I can get two 5 ft sticks of either DOM tubing or something simular.... but it has to be something that can be broken down and stored easily. I think the ones in that link maybe a little light duty for heavy rigs like ours IMO...

The one in the link is interesting and has the potential to support quite a bit of load in the right soil conditions. It would be a lot easier to get out of the ground than an axle shaft or 5' of tube. I doubt any of these will work in soft saturated soils, muds, clays, etc... Something soft you're probably better off burying your tire.
The only commercial ones I've seen are the ARB ground anchor. I have trouble seeing that unit work very well, especially for the $600 price tag.

Don't forget the pull pal. Just don't forget to drill a hole on the back and attach a strap to the back so you can pull it out after it digs itself in really deep when the soil is soft. The pull pal style does not look to hard to make

You use the winch to pull the axles or pipe. put attachments on them. I have used a big steel stake to pull a 4 wheeler out. It works.
they make an anchor called a plow anchor. I saw one in a rig that had been cut on.

Thanks for all the ideas. I've been wanting to make my own anchor system and was hoping to end up with something that was able to become compact and was able to work in our typical alaskan swamp mud. Seems a 2nd rig works best for that situation:beatdeadhorse5:

Yeah I plan on building a home made pull pal style anchor point, they seem to work pretty well on small to medium sized rigs but I think you would have to up size the shovel part for a big rig or some really hard pulls. Also if you build one be very careful on the construction and make sure your welds are good because you have to remember the type of dresses yu are putting on it.
